Don’t worry, it’s normal
We’ve all been beginners. Here’s what to expect.
Showing up with questions is the norm: at Tandem Club in Palma we welcome you calmly, without judgement, and we want your first day to feel light and fun.
Myths that aren’t true
You’ve probably heard some of these. Let’s set the record straight.
“I have no rhythm”
Rhythm is trained, not inherited. With practice and good music, everyone improves.
“I don’t have a partner”
We rotate in class: you don’t need to bring anyone. You’ll meet classmates and dance with different people.
“I’m too old or too young”
We have students from 18 to 70. What matters is wanting to move and have a good time—not the number on your ID.
“I can’t dance at all”
We start from scratch, literally. You don’t need prior dance-floor experience: we take the first step together.
What should I wear?
It depends a bit on the discipline. Here are our recommendations by type of dance.
Partner dances
- •Comfortable clothes you can turn, bend and stretch in without feeling restricted.
- •Closed shoes with a smooth sole that slides a little; avoid rubber soles that grip the floor.
- •No high heels at first: your balance will thank you.
Solo dances
- •Comfortable, breathable clothes you can move freely in.
- •Light smooth-soled trainers so you can spin and travel without braking.
- •Bring water: there’s sweat and fun in equal measure.
Tap
- •If you have tap shoes, bring them; if not, closed shoes with a hard sole (not soft trainers).
- •Comfortable clothes that let you see your footwork clearly.
- •A spare pair of socks, just in case.
BalletFit / FlexFit / Soltura / Barre
- •Fairly fitted sportswear so the teachers can see your posture and correct you.
- •Grip socks or bare feet; no shoes needed.
- •A water bottle and the urge to stretch and gain mobility.
What a typical class looks like
Relaxed pace and great vibes. Timings vary by day and group; the goal is to enjoy while you learn.
- 01
Warm-up
Gentle mobility, music and a bit of moving with the beat so you arrive at class awake.
- 02
Breaking down the step
The teachers break down the movement calmly, step by step, with time to ask and practise.
- 03
Practising the step
We practise the steps we’ve learned at different speeds and with different partners, to lock them in and feel the progress.
